Is bloging and social networking allowed in school?

Our local schools do not allow any type of social networking. If a blog is school based, then it would be allowed. If a blog belongs to a students, just to socialize and keep people up to date, then it is prohibited. They do not allow Myspace, Facebook, etc., but the children are allowed to check and send email.
I think that a blog would be a wonderful tool for students and parents if one were created specifically for a class. If a student got home and forgot their homework assignment, then they could get on the blog and see what it was. They could even post a comment about needing some help with an assignment and others could respond. It would also be beneficial for parents to get on and see what their student is doing in class. If the teacher took time to update it and keep it up, it would be a wonderful tool for parents and students.

If your school is blocking blogger.com, you can do the same thing with a wiki, which is not usually blocked - if it is, you just need to make a case to your tech person.

I am not sure if they block wikis or not. I would assume not since I haven't heard anything about it. Although you can do some of the same things, you just hear so much more about blogs. Maybe they just haven't had enough drama with wikis yet to ban them in school. If they get popular and consume a number of students then they will probably get banned too.
